Starting the Journey

I stumbled into Paleo through a friend (although I’ve heard the rumblings for years).  This friend of mine has been through breast cancer and was talking with another friend who currently has it. I was listening in, but the track in my head was playing the “what’s going on in the world” soundtrack many women hear when we start adding up the friends/acquaintances who’ve gotten that lifechanging news.

But friend #1 casually mentioned that she’s eating a Paleo diet and it struck me once again. I decided to dig in and learn more, as here’s a person I respect and admire, who’s been through a health crisis and come out of it with a new way of thinking about food (plus she looks great – bonus!). It Starts With Food was just about to be released so I pre-ordered it on Amazon. I also borrowed a couple of her cookbooks that day (Paleo Comfort Foods by Julie and Charles Mayfield and Everyday Paleo by Sarah Fragoso). I also ordered those cookbooks. What can I say, when I’m in, I’m in.

Cruising through the cookbooks while awaiting my Amazon order, I couldn’t get over how nourishing and whole it all looked. I’ve experimented with diets over the years – always in the name of healthy living, although like anyone my weight fluctuates. I’ve been vegetarian, vegan, and raw (nearly impossible in central Illinois btw), but I’ve always come back to meat. Even before this I knew that I’m a carnivore. I like meat and need it to feel my best. But I definitely want to know the animals were treated with kindness and dignity.

So here are these delicious recipes and along comes It Starts with Food. It appeals to all my sensibilities about nourishment and strength. It seems so logical, so obvious, so compelling. The science makes sense to me, even though I’m not a super science-y person. I decide to give it a go, harnessing the power of my new cookbooks  (along with Eat Like a Dinosaur and Well Fed, which came along a bit later) and that wonderful world wide web.

We’re three months into it. I can’t wait to tell you more.
